From Park Meetups to a Maryland Homeschool Community
Before HCHC had classes, programs, or even a name, one homeschooling mom was looking for a place where her family could belong. She turned to Meetup.com to connect with other local families. One mom became two. Two became five. Soon, families were gathering in Howard County parks, especially Centennial and Meadowbrook, while their children played, explored, and learned together.
Those informal gatherings began about three to four years before HCHC was formally established as a nonprofit in 2013. The meetups grew beyond Howard County as more families found one another in Bethesda, Baltimore, and Frederick.
What began as a small circle of parents became a Maryland nonprofit built around support, relationships, and flexibility for homeschool families. Today, HCHC Leadership Academy brings families together through small-group classes, online and in-person learning, field trips, and umbrella oversight.
The community has grown, but its heart remains the same: one family reaching out, and another family answering.
